Hebrews 11

Heb 11:1-3 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. For by it the elders obtained a good testimony. By faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that the things which are seen were not made of things which are visible.  NKJV

The Essence of Faith

- Faith has substance.

Heb. 11:3 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for… NKJV

“God does not expect us to submit our faith to him without reason, but the very limits of our reason make faith a necessity.”  Augustine

The Essence of Faith

Faith is a lifestyle and not an event.

Heb 11:6 And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him. NIV

The Essence of Faith

- Faith is fueled through consistent and meaningful connection with the living Word and the written Word.

Heb. 11:6 …he rewards those who earnestly seek him. NIV

Acts 4:13 When they saw the courage of Peter and John and realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men, they were astonished and they took note that these men had been with Jesus.

Rom 10:17 So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.  NKJV

Acts 28:14-15 There we found some brothers who invited us to spend a week with them. And so we came to Rome. The brothers there had heard that we were coming, and they traveled as far as the Forum of Appius and the Three Taverns to meet us. At the sight of these men Paul thanked God and was encouraged. NIV

The Evidence of Faith

- Faith is believing in something you cannot see.

Heb. 11:1 …the evidence of things not seen. NKJV

Heb. 11: 3 By faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that the things which are seen were not made of things which are visible. NKJV

Rom 1:20 For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities-his eternal power and divine nature-have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse. NIV

The Evidence of Faith

- The conviction of faith often defies our circumstances.

Hab 3:17-18 Though the fig tree does not bud and there are no grapes on the vines, though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food, though there are no sheep in the pen and no cattle in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will be joyful in God my Savior. NIV

The Effects of Faith

- You will have a positive testimony.

Heb. 11:2 For by it the elders obtained a good testimony. NKJV

Matt 5:16 In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven. NIV

The Effects of Faith

- Mature faith is less concerned about our own affairs and more concerned with God’s affairs.

Ps 115:1 Not to us, O LORD, not to us but to your name be the glory, because of your love and faithfulness. NIV

Heb 13:20-21 May the God of peace, who through the blood of the eternal covenant brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep, equip you with everything good for doing his will, and may he work in us what is pleasing to him, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen. NIV
